Opportunity Youth Day at the Capitol

Young people and their adult allies recently gathered in Baton Rouge for Opportunity Youth Day at the Capitol, a day focused on civic engagement, learning, and connection. Participants toured the Capitol, observed the legislative process, met with members of the legislature, and engaged directly in how decisions are made across Louisiana.

The experience gave young people a clearer view of how systems work and how policy connects to the opportunities available in their own lives. It also created space for them to share their perspectives and ask questions about the pathways in front of them.

The day was organized in partnership with the Louisiana Opportunity Youth Alliance (LOYAL), a statewide network committed to ensuring young people have access to the relationships, resources, and opportunities they need to thrive. Across Louisiana, nearly 1 in 6 young people ages 16 to 24 are not connected to work or school. LOYAL brings partners together to strengthen pathways into education, employment, and long-term stability.

LOYAL’s policy priorities focus on:

· expanding career pathways

· strengthening wraparound services like housing and healthcare

· advancing policies that support economic security

Together, these efforts help create more connected systems that make it easier for young people to move forward.

Reconcile is a founding member of LOYAL and a leader in the national Opportunity Youth Caucus, founded by Congressman Troy Carter of Louisiana. This work reflects a shared commitment to strengthening systems at both the state and national level so they better support young people as they transition into adulthood.

Opportunity Youth Day at the Capitol brings this work to life. When young people engage directly with systems, they build knowledge, confidence, and a stronger sense of their role in shaping the future.
