Internship Awareness Month: Learning Through Real Work Experience

April is Internship Awareness Month, a time to highlight how real-world experience helps young people take the next step into the workforce. At Reconcile, Externships are a key part of that journey, helping Interns move from career exploration into real work environments with confidence.

After building foundational skills in the Café and exploring career pathways, Interns enter Tier 4 of training through an Externship. This on-the-job learning experience places them alongside professionals in the field, where they can apply their skills, receive feedback, and better understand what it takes to succeed in a workplace setting.

Externships are where learning becomes real. Interns embed with staff, take on responsibilities, and experience the pace and expectations of a workplace. This hands-on experience helps them connect what they have learned in training to real-world application, making the transition into employment or continued education clearer and more achievable.

Kovin and Myshia are currently in this final stage of training at the Higgins Hotel, one of Reconcile’s Employment Partners. Myshia is working in the back of the house, building her culinary skills and gaining experience in a professional kitchen. Kovin is working front of the house, strengthening his customer service skills while engaging directly with guests.

“I am most excited to cook with other chefs at Café Reconcile. My goals after completing the program are to further my education in the hospitality industry and going to culinary school to be a chef.” — Myshia

“I’d say what inspired me to join Reconcile are the many opportunities and avenues for growth. During my time at Reconcile the skills I wish to develop are better communication and leadership.” — Kovin

Externships play an important role for new entrants into the workforce. They create space to learn, practice, and grow before taking the next step. By combining training with real work experience, young people are able to see what is possible, understand what is expected, and build the confidence to pursue their goals.

At Reconcile, this stage of the journey is about more than placement. It is about preparation. When young people have the opportunity to learn in real work environments, they are better equipped to step into their future and succeed.
